The motto of Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men was the basis of the early Republican party. The ideas of a man's right to work where and how he wanted, and to accumulate property in his own name were the goals of that ideology. This was the ideology of the North in the period directly before the Civil War.
At the heart of the controversy over the extension of slavery was the issue of whether the northern or southern form of society would take root in the West and shape American destiny. It finally led to the election of Abraham Lincoln, and to the Civil War itself.
The ideology of Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men prior to the Civil War, provided the moral consensus which allowed the North, for the first time in history, to mobilize an entire society in modern warfare.
What if no jobs exist or a man cannot find a job for which he is ably trained? What if we must depend upon our government for our every need?
What if the horizons of our great land are shortened? What if we as men must live as mice in high rise stack and pack housing.
What if we as a people live unarmed in cities patrolled by high flying drones?
What are we to do when there is no more free soil , free labor, or free men? What then is our course???

Muskie and Kerry
In 1980 Secretary of State Cyrus Vance had resigned due to his opposition to the proposed military mission code named Eagle Claw to rescue the US hostages held in Iran. Operation Eagle Claw ( The first ever use of the US Delta Force) proved to be a complete failure and claimed the lives of six servicemen. US prestige in the world was at an all time low due to the hostage crisis and the USSR flexing its muscles in Afghanistan.
Whoever assumed the duties of Secretary of state was sure to be grilled in Congressional hearings and was not assured of confirmation by any means. Grudgingly President Carter proposed the nomination of the late Maine Senator Edmund Muskie to be Secretary of State. The US Senate is a unique fraternity and they do not eat their own. Muskies nomination was easily approved saving face for not only for President Carter but also the State Department.
Moving ahead to 2012 four US citizens including the US ambassador to Libya were massacred at Benghazi. The Obama administration and State department seemingly fumbled through any legitimate explanation as to why the massacre occurred for several weeks. UN Ambassador Susan Rice as a sacrificial lamb to the Sunday talking head TV shows to explain away the massacre as a reaction to a U-tube video. Having fallen upon the company sword Ms. Rice was proposed as the next Secretary of State and whether competent or not to hold the office she was damaged goods.
Since the Benghazi incident Secretary of State Clinton has pretty much fallen off the face of the planet and was unavailable for hearings on Benghazi due to a concussion. The Arab spring has turned into the winter of Islam and democracy has been replaced by a theocracy in Egypt..
What does one do when the credibility of State Department lies in shambles and any potential nominees to Secretary of State face potential grinding damaging testimony in front of the Senate?
The answer is simple and tried and true. You nominate John Kerry to be your Secretary of State.
No nasty questions , no explanations for past actions because he was not there, and no problems because he is a US Senator and a member of the club.
One small caveat is that the nomination of Kerry may be held up pending Hillary Clinton giving testimony concerning Benghazi to the US Senate. It conj ours up images of the great awakening sermon Sinners in the hands of an Angry God by Johnathan Edwards. And yes the image of Hillary dangling as a spider above a candle flame is quite amusing.

The Compromise of 1850 and 2012
In 1850 a historic compromise was reached which delayed what seemed to be an inevitable war between the states for a period of 10 years. The burning issue of the time was to determine whether the territories won as a result of the Mexican American war would enter the union as slave or free states.
The compromise ended up being five separate pieces of legislation with the most controversial part being the Fugitive Slave Act. The Fugitive Slave Act made any federal official who did not arrest a runaway slave liable to pay a fine of $1,000 (About $26,600 in USD as of 2011). In addition any person aiding a runaway slave by providing food or shelter was subject to six months' imprisonment and a $1,000 fine.
The Slave Act was the impetus that split the northern Whigs from the southern Whigs and led to the formation of the Republican party.
In 2012 we await what to most seems to be a non historic compromise as to revising or elimination of the Bush era tax cuts. And although there have been petitions of secession issued by
several states few of us would believe that we are actually heading to a war among ourselves.
However I believe whatever form the compromise of 2012 takes it will accentuate a schism between the tea party and the old line GOP. Will this schism give birth to a third political party? The answer is probably no. History has never been kind to third parties no matter how noble their purpose or standard bearer. One of two things will happen.

A Modern American Whig
After the 2012 election many conservatives such as myself went quite
frankly into a state of mourning. After spending a billion dollars
Romney lost the election and the GOP failed to gain control of the
senate.
I also watched in bewilderment as my state and local CA GOP gave financial preference to establishment candidates and spent money they did not have on GOP versus GOP contests in the primary election. After the general election the CA GOP went from being the minority party in the state to being a minor party.
I and I sure others had feeling that we somehow had failed as individuals that we could have done more. I made two trips to Nevada to walk precincts. Perhaps I could have skipped more time with the family and locked myself in the guest room so I could make annoying phone calls for Romney.
In retrospect as I watched the GOP convention several months ago I was taken aback by the lack of utterance of two words over four days. The words Tea Party somehow never made it past the lips of Christie, Rubio, Mia Love, Walker or Romney. Surely the GOP professionals who were totally in charge and knew what they were doing right?? I ordered a Romney yard sign and it never showed up and then I ordered a second one and it took five weeks to ship. Surely this was not a sign of incompetence? I assured myself the signs were being shipped to where they were needed ... right?
But what ever doubts I had about the GOP were solidified when I watched the total lack of response by them as Allen West was being robbed due to election fraud in FL and when John Boehner proclaimed there would be no more Tea Party caucus.
I then started to think is the GOP relevant and do we need a new political party? This led the historian in me to do some research on the old Whig party and why it ceased to be relevant.
The Whig party was formed to be in opposition to President Andrew Jackson and the policies of the Democratic party to which he belonged. The party ceased to be relevant when it failed to take a stand against slavery and with the passing of its most famous spokespersons Senators Daniel Webster of NH and Senator Henry Clay of KY. The term "going the way of the Whigs" meant being obsolete or irrelevant. In 1856 the Whig party was dead and the Republican party took its place.
The term Whig also means Patriot from its British party roots. If there is one thing us tea party people believe is that we are patriots. It is not inconceivable to me that a new political party could arise simply in opposition to President Barack Obama and the policies of the Democratic party to which he belongs.
As an individual there is one thing I can do to gain the attention of the GOP. I plan on changing my voter registration to independent. This is more like a dating relationship where I am letting the other person know I am open to seeing other people and available to a new suitor. If millions of tea party people do this one of two things will happen either the GOP will come running back to us for our attention or they simply "will go the way of the Whigs."

Ending Barbarians at the Gates
The last year and a half has proved challenging both politically and professorially. After I recovered from a knee replacement I have been managing 4 to 5 construction projects. It takes a certain amount of energy and yes a small amount of anger to do a political blog posting. What little energy and anger I had were channeled given to the real world of politics and not just blogging about it.
But now is a time for reflection and ultimately what our nation needs is out of the box thinking.
Now is a time for a new blog and new ideas. This is the last posting as the Barbarian. I am starting a new blog called A Modern American Whig. I welcome you to follow me there.

Joey Porters Unofficial 2012 CA Primary Voting Guide
Sorry I have not had the time or energy to post on my blog recently. I continue to be blessed with a workload that would give a mule a hernia.
This posting is for my friends , neighbors and acquaintances in Solano and Contra Costa County CA and I encourage you to share it. . With the new open primary system in CA and redrawn districts for many offices I am sure many of you are confused as to who you should be voting for or against. Having been mildly involved with politics for the last couple of years I have a working knowledge of many of the candidates running. If you disagree with my recommendation at least you will be a better informed voter and can vote the opposite way. With the new open primary system in CA the top two vote getters will go into the general election so you may have two Democrats or Republicans to vote for. The open primary allows you to vote for a person you may not vote for in the general election but are worthy of further consideration
HERE ARE MY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE 2012 CA PRIMARY ELECTION
US Senate: Dan Hughes not exciting but good conservative values
US Congress: District 5: Vallejo and Benicia are no longer represented by George Miller and are now represented by Mike Thompson who is infamous for having a BBQ with Saddam Hues-sen
My suggestion is Randy Loftin a military veteran and flat tax advocate
US Congress District 3: If you live in F airfield or Vacaville Please vote for Rick Tubbs. If you don't live there consider making a donation to his campaign. You will never find a better candidate for Congress than this man
US Congress District 7: A large part of Contra Costa County - Virgina Fuller is a smart lady, a tea party leader and a strong pro life advocate. I am proud to say my first political contribution was to her.
State Senator Solano County
Here is a chance to be creative . Incumbent Lois Wolk was running unopposed until last week when a great person threw his hat in the ring as a write in candidate. That person is Gary Clift. Gary is a good honest man and an advocate of smaller government that stays out of our personal lives.

State Assembly Fairfield Vacaville and eastern Contra Costa County
Mike Hudson- A good man to send to Sacramento to fix our mess and my personal friend

Scared of a Hoodie ??
I was raised in WV which is 95% Caucasian . I had one African American classmate in the eighth grade and no more until I went to college. Yes I was exposed to prejudice toward blacks and Jews growing up but never understood it. In fact I grew to hate it.
Many years latter I figured out the root cause of the prejudice was more economic than anything else. If only a few jobs exist than people will fight for those few jobs to provide for their families even if it meant perpetuating myths and stereotypes.
Having learned not to hate I learned not to fear. Many years latter I settled in the city of Vallejo CA which is a diverse a population as you will ever find. I often see African Americans walking in my city wearing winter coats on 80 degree days. I assume they are cold. When I see a young man in a Hoodie I assume he is cold and nothing else.
What do you see??

THE BARBARIAN IS BACK
For quite I while I have not given this blog very much attention. I have listened to others as to what was important in taking our county back and that involved getting up and off the couch. To an extent that is true but today I had a meeting with a friend of mine who is running for office.
Much of that discussion involved what I can do and not necessarily what I want to do in the coming year which is our most important election since 1864.
My friend told me that I had a gift for writing. With that gift he explained I had the ability to really help his campaign along with another local prominent politician running for office. I also would be able to effect public opinion and facilitate growth for groups and causes I admire on a scale that I could never have imagined through resources my friend opened to me.
Yes the Barbarian is Back and he is taking no hostages. Join me on my journey.

The Most Important Thing You Will Ever Read
My friends, I must make you aware of a matter of the utmost importance. Several months ago I started this Blog as an attempt to communicate my thoughts and ideas to as many people as possible. I have spoken on many issues including health care, the expanding budget deficit, and environmental issues among others. But nothing, I repeat nothing, is as important as the subject matter of this Blog.
This Blog concerns a world leader who has made outrageous predictions including strife between nations, famine, and earthquakes. His followers are fanatical and have been tortured and even died in his service. They believe there can be no peace without him and those who are not with him are against him. He has requested all to follow him and has even stated that there is no life without him. He has stated that those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned because they have not believed
This leader was never elected to office but was born into it. The chronology of this event is as follows:
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.
Many of you know that this world leader as Jesus Christ. He is called the King of Kings .

I Will Vote For The Following
In 2012 I have decided to vote for the following
- I will vote to have EBT cards cut up for welfare recipients so they will endure the shame of using food stamps to buy healthy foods for their families
- I will vote to lay off thousands of tax attorneys and tax preparers so we can can have a fair flat tax
- I will vote to do away with the earned income credit so all Americans pay their fair share of taxes and at the same time I will vote to do away with the tax credits that encourage crony capitalism so warren Buffet and General Electric pay their fair share too.
- I will vote to gut the EPA and do away withe the Departments of Education and the Department of Energy
- I will vote in general for smaller government , less regulations , and less bureaucrats to enforce them
- I will vote to secure our borders. Everything else involving immigration will follow
If you are running for office and agree with what I said above then you have my vote.

Jan 31, 2012 Barack Obama Loses Election To Second Term
Connecting the dots and thinking outside the box. These are things I take pride in doing my day job as a construction manager. Today I make my most prolific prognostication as a Blogger using these same instincts.
I am predicting that the special election for the First Congressional district of Oregon being held January 31, 2012 goes to the GOP then President Obama will drop out of his bed to be reelected for President.
The special election is being held to fill the seat of disgraced Dem. Congressman David Wu who resigned in the wake of accusations that he made unwanted sexual advances on the daughter of a campaign donor and friend.
The 1st district in Oregon is by no means an easy race for the GOP to win. In fact in the 2010 election Mr. Wu garnered 57% of the vote. Like CA the big Tea Party red wave rushed to the Oregon border and stopped, but even in 2010 the Oregon 1st race was held up as a potential bellweather election with national implications.
There are others who will make this prediction over the next couple of months and you will hear it more often as this election approaches.
Just remember where you heard it first.

The Writing On the Wall
The Writing on the Wall
Over the last few days I have seen a growing event known as "The Occupy Wall Street Movement" Participating in that movement is a rabble of socialists , communists and anarchists taking direction from Van Jones and International Answer. These are the useful idiots as described by Karl Marx featuring a rent a mob funded by MoveOn.org and Geroge Soros. Joining in this motley crew are the leeches from the SEIU and government public employee unions.
Our President tacitly encourages the protesters by fanning the smoldering cinders of liberal discontent. Will this raise the flames of riots?
This is not going to end well but how bad is anyone's guess.
Following is an excerpt from the book of Daniel detailing the events of the night before the fall of the great Babylonian empire.
1King Belshazzar gave a great banquet for a thousand of his nobles and drank wine with them. 2While Belshazzar was drinking his wine, he gave orders to bring in the gold and silver goblets that Nebuchadnezzar his fathera had taken from the temple in Jerusalem, so that the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines might drink from them. 3So they brought in the gold goblets that had been taken from the temple of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them. 4As they drank the wine, they praised the gods of gold and silver, of bronze, iron, wood and stone.

No Aunt Bee For Me
Last week New Jersey Governor Chris Christie traveled to CA to make a much anticipated speech at the Reagan Library potentially announcing his candidacy for President. No announcement was made but in the audience one of his biggest fans was in attendance. That fan was non other than the newly named head of Hewlett Packard and former CA GOP Gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman. Meg spent 75 million of her own money running an incredibly inept ( OK Stupid) campaign against the liberal dinosaur Jerry Brown and lost.
If you look at the picture of the loveable Aunt Bea from the old Andy Griffith TV show and you will notice the striking resemblance to Meg. You can now stop laughing except for one thing, Meg wants Gov. Christie to be the GOP nominee. The day before the speech Gov. Christie met with Aunt Bee and several big money players trying to talk him into running.
Thursday of this week Gov. Christie made a press release that he will be making a major announcement and that he has invited "major donors" to appear with him. Normally one would say they are appearing with" major supporters".

I Am Jane Jamison
I was recently saddened to hear of the death of conservative news-blogger Jane Jamison.
Jane Jamison was not her real name in fact it was an alias she found necessary to protect her privacy in the "tolerant" bay area.
Jane's first postings were links to news stories on the Bay Area Patriots Yahoo Group under the name LuvMyCountry. In August of 2009 at the same time I started my little Blog she started UnCoverage.Net. Over the last two years I watched as her little Blog grew into a big one. My little blog remained little and I am fine with that. Jane may have been an attorney by day but her true passion was blogging. I suffer from a slight case of insomnia and when ever I checked into Facebook after midnight Jane would be up. In fact most of her postings were done after midnight. If you are up at wee hours sometimes you stumble onto new stories before anyone else does. The couple of times that happened to me I sent my leads to Jane.
Until Jane's passing I never really understood the significance of the name UnCoverage.
The bay area has numerous old media outlets and all of them are deaf dumb and blind to any viewpoint that is not liberal. If you gather 20 hippies together to protest for affordable housing you are assured a report on the local evening news. Gather two thousand people downtown next to a TV station to rally for a conservative cause you will be ignored. Jane discovered and covered news-stories no one else would. She often rallied the troops urging us to show up for rallies and to contact our representatives for conservative causes. Many of these causes were in fact lost causes in the liberal People Republic of CA but Jane urged us to mount our steeds and charge the wind mills like Don Quixote.
After the election of 2010 Jane grew continually disillusioned with liberal CA and in fact wanted to move to TX. With the real estate market continuing to suck she was unable to fullfill that dream. Jane did not do a lot of non political postings but when she did it was as an avid fan of the University of Nebraska football team. I invited her to speak at my tea party but she declined stating she feared attacks from liberals and that she had her car keyed twice at events. In May she sent me a birthday greeting on Facebook "Happy Birthday Patriot" Coming from Jane that was a real compliment.
On 8-26 Jane made her final posting saying she was going to be away for a few days to deal with a family emergency. Over the last few weeks I checked her site looking forward to her return. After the Solyndra scandal broke I grew even more anxious for her return knowing she would find the "hidden dirt" on this story no one else could. I have been extremely busy at work and I only stumbled unto news of Jane's passing last night and was shocked she had passed away on 8-30.
Over the last couple of years at tea party rally s many people have held up signs saying
"I am John Galt" from the book Atlas Shrugs. This 6-3 300# guy may hold up a sign at the next rally I am attending saying " I am Jane Jamison" maybe you should too. If there is a tea party table in Heaven Jane is sitting there.

Remember the Maine???
Two years ago while visiting an antique store in Monterrey CA. I came upon a Crystal ship setting on a table. The ship had etched into its sides the words "Remember the Maine" It sat upon a piece of paper which said the article was for for sale for $50.00 with the interesting and sarcastic comment " Is there really anybody left who actually remembers the Maine??"
The USS Maine had been sent to Havana, Cuba to protect U.S. interests during the Cuban revolt against Spain.On the evening of 15 February 1898, she suddenly exploded, and swiftly sank, killing nearly three quarters of her crew. Though then, as now, the cause and responsibility for her sinking were unclear; popular opinion in the U.S. blamed Spain, and the sinking (popularized in the phrase Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain!) was one of the precipitating events of the Spanish-American War. Her sinking remains the subject of speculation, with various authors proposing that she sank due to the results of an undetected fire in one of her coal bunkers or that she was the victim of a navel mine.
It was America's original day of infamy whose citizen's flames of rage were fanned by the yellow rag journalism of William Randolf Hearst. As a child I remember the date of 2-15 was still being identified on calenders as Remember the Maine Day. Now it is reduced to obscurity as the start of a war most Americans are not even aware we fought.
What does this have to do with anything? I have watched the remembrance and significance of Dec. 7th Pearl Harbor Day fading with each passing year. It has become politically incorrect to remember an attack by a Nation that provides the pickup truck in your driveway. Unlike the Maine the sunken USS Arizona sits as both a memorial and tomb on our native soil and thousands of tourists visit it every year.
I wonder in 100 years from now if we will remember 911? When the children of the victims who died that awful day themselves pass into the great beyond will anyone remember?
The real question is will there still be a great nation known as the United States of America left to remember all of those who have fought and died in her defense or will we be remembered like the Maine??

Taking Your Ball And Going Home
To those of us old enough to remember some of the fondest memories of our youth was playing various sandlot sports. My personal favorites included touch football and softball. Occasionally an all out argument would break out over a perceived rule violation such as touching a tree on the side line without actually stepping over the line or whether the rock which the foul ball hit was in foul territory. Generally these arguments were settled after 10 to 15 min of intense negotiations. In some rare instances the game abruptly stopped when the player who owned the ball said " I'm taking my ball and I am going home"
What does the above have to do with anything? Well ,recently many Americans including myself have been purchasing precious metals in one form or an other simply because we do not trust the financial markets or even the American Dollar with Obama at the helm.
The money invested in precious metals goes to the purchase of those precious metals and nothing else. There are no mutual fund stock shares to be pumped , there are no investment decisions to be made by a board of directors and there is no investment capital to be loaned by bankers. The precious metals investment simply sits there oblivious to rest of the financial world.
Many of us have decided " to take our ball and go home"

In Praise of Jimmy Carter
In the late 1970s a peanut farmer from Georgia was our President
On Sunday morning he walked to church with a Bible under his arm to teach his Sunday school class at a Baptist church.
His brother hawked Billy Beer and his mother was attacked by a rabbit in a row boat. His wife conveyed the grace of southern gentility.
When the hostages were taken he burrowed into the White House never leaving the DC area. He did not want to be accused of not caring about our national crisis.
When the price of gas raised to the unbelievable cost of one dollar a gallon he championed coal gasification and shale oil projects to make us energy independent .
When he spoke of the spirit malaise in America we knew he was right. ( We also knew he was the source of much of the malaise)
When a rescue mission by our troops failed he notified our nation and he took his medicine as we took ours.
Now we have a community organizer as our President.
He seldom attends church and when he does it espouses black liberation theology.
His family uses Air Force One as a shuttle to one exotic vacation locale to the next. His wife preaches the virtues of fresh vegetables to children while noshing on burgers in private.
When the stock market tumbled and our bond rating was down graded he continued to attend fund raisers and play golf.
When the price of gas approached gas approached $4.00 he did nothing but continue to tie the hands of domestic energy producers.
When he spoke of shared sacrifice and evils of tax breaks for corporate jets. We simply just turned off the TV set.
